The Circle of Hope

The Circle of Hope is a new fundraising initiative that encompasses all those who helped lead the way in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Since 1986, SAAF has provided compassionate care to individuals living with HIV/AIDS and offered prevention resources to the community to help lower the spread. While SAAF continues to support our LGBTQ+ population, your support will allow us to provide educational outreach and expanded STI testing and treatment to all women, with a special effort to reach out to our Latina community..

Each dollar donated specifically toward our “Circle of Hope” campaign will help us in lowering the spread of STI’s while providing treatment for HIV, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Syphilis in women.

Red Ribbon Collective

The Red Ribbon Collective (RRC) is an important group of individuals who embody the idea behind the red ribbon itself — dedication to bringing awareness and support for people living with HIV/AIDS and to helping the San Antonio AIDS Foundation’s vision of creating a community free of HIV.

RRC members are more than just ‘interested’ donors.  In fact, RRC members are our most important ambassadors!  They are activists who live their compassion for those affected by HIV by providing unrestricted gifts to the San Antonio AIDS Foundation to further its mission.

We are grateful to our RRC members – individuals dedicated to understanding the evolution of the disease and how they can support service and care efforts. Support from members of the RRC helps us increase awareness, focus on testing and prevention efforts, provide medical treatment and supportive behavioral counseling and other social support.  The support of the RRC is a vital part of efforts to reduce stigma and empower clients to live healthy lives.

Red Ribbon Origin

Where did the red ribbon first start?

In 1991 – a decade after the HIV epidemic began – a group of 12 artists gathered to discuss a new project for Visual AIDS, a New York arts organization that raises awareness of HIV. They were photographers, painters, filmmakers and costume designers, and they sat around in the shared gallery space in New York’s East Village. After a short brainstorm they came up with a simple idea that later became one of the most recognized symbols of the decade: the red ribbon, worn to signify awareness and support for people living with HIV.

In the early days, the artists made the ribbons themselves and distributed them around the New York art scene and dropped them off at theatres. Initially there was text that went with it, to explain why they were being worn, but eventually this was dropped as its symbolism no longer needed an explanation.

Within weeks of the red ribbon idea being born, world-famous actors starting wearing it to high-profile award ceremonies such as the Academy Awards and talking about why it was important. The media also took notice, and within a short space of time the red ribbon symbol became universally recognized.
